Abstract
The atmospheric boundary layer height (ABLH) is a key parameter for characterizing near-surface atmospheric mixing, pollutant dispersion, and land–atmosphere exchange, yet its continuous retrieval remains challenging because different observing systems respond to different aerosol, thermodynamic, and turbulence signatures. LiDAR and ceilometer measurements provide high-resolution observations of atmospheric vertical structure, but conventional gradient-, variance-, and wavelet-based retrievals can be affected by weak aerosol contrast, clouds, residual and elevated aerosol layers, signal noise, and instrument-dependent characteristics. This study provides a structured, LiDAR-centered synthesis of recent advances in ABLH retrieval, focusing on signal processing, ABL-specific multi-source data integration, machine and deep learning, and emerging physics-informed approaches. The reviewed evidence shows that improved signal processing, automated layer tracking, and complementary thermodynamic, turbulence, surface, and model information can help reduce ambiguities that cannot be addressed from aerosol backscatter alone. Machine-learning approaches provide additional capability for automated and nonlinear retrieval, but reported performance remains dependent on reference definition, atmospheric regime, site, instrument, and validation strategy. Particular challenges include uncertainty quantification, physical layer attribution, cross-site and cross-instrument generalization, and operational robustness. Future progress therefore requires physics-informed integration, independent cross-domain validation, transparent uncertainty characterization, and systematic evaluation of failure modes rather than increasing algorithmic complexity alone.
